Project Overview
During my internship with the Department of Defense (DoD), I worked on a project with a team to improve technical manuals. The US Army Technical Manual (TM) development and update process is currently a slow and costly process. This is due to a multitude of factors like a lack of traceability to an authoritative source of truth, poor accessibility and usability, and a high quantity of source data. I created an interface prototype where users can utilize immersive technologies like VR, AR, and MR. This interface prototype enhances user experience by making vehicle maintenance intuitive and accessible, allowing users to virtually explore components, receive step-by-step guidance, and visualize maintenance outcomes.
Problem: The main challenge was the complexity of vehicle maintenance manuals, which often required users to cross-reference multiple documents and lacked interactivity. Technicians needed a more intuitive and engaging way to access maintenance information. The solution had to provide interactive, real-time guidance that could reduce human error and speed up the maintenance process. Working on this project gave me hands-on experience integrating immersive technologies into user interfaces.
Role: My role in the project involved being the chief architect and creating the interface prototype for the immersive experience. I used Sketchfab to display the interactive 3D models. I also conducted user research through soldier feedback. I focused on integrating VR, AR, and MR features that allow users to virtually explore vehicle components, receive step-by-step guidance, and visualize maintenance outcomes.
Learnings:  I learned how to design intuitive interactions that make complex maintenance tasks more accessible. Additionally, the project helped me understand the challenges of creating cross-platform solutions (VR, AR, MR) that are consistent and user-friendly.
